Recertification by Professional Development Program
The geriatric certification program is in a state of transition as the merger with the Board of Pharmacy Specialties is completed. For recertification through the Professional Development Program (continuing education), pharmacists who became certified in geriatrics prior to December 31, 2016 are required to complete 75 credit hours of designated geriatric continuing education during the five-year certification cycle. Pharmacists who became certified in geriatrics after January 1, 2017 are required to complete 100 credit hours of designated geriatric continuing education during the seven-year certification cycle. Only CE credits that have been designated by BPS may be used for recertification. The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and ASHP are the two approved continuing professional development providers for recertification of Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists. Download table with summary of live and online CE offerings planned for the next several years from the two professional development providers.
This table shows the BCGP Recertification Activities Available During 2017.
The continuing pharmacy education credit that is approved by BPS for the Professional Development Program is also approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Thus, certificants in the U.S. who complete CPE credits for purposes of recertification can use those same credits for maintenance of pharmacist licensure.
BPS recommends completing continuing education credits each year, rather than waiting until near the end of the cycle to complete most of the CE credits. The CE programs approved for BCGP recertification have an expiration date of six months from the time of release. Thus, obtaining 100 credit hours of CE in a period of 6 - 12 months is likely to be very difficult, if not impossible. It is best to plan ahead and obtain approved CE credits throughout the seven-year certification cycle.
NOTE: The Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist who is renewing by the Professional Development Program should notify BPS when all 75 credit hours of the PDP have been completed by sending an e-mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
